Yesterday the new apartment manager put eviction notices on several doors. But I didn't know there were others. I really couldn't think. If our manager who just left for a better job hadn't been kind enough to be reachable, I don't know what I would have done. The only reason she had been a manager here was a serious health crisis. She is exceptional and has found an exceptional job.
Usually, here in the U.S. where rents keep skyrocketing, apartments hire one manager after another. The apartment I moved from cycled through managers every six months to a year. None of them had managerial experience.
I've lived in apartments where managers have serious criminal records, where they walk into women's apartments, and where they arbitrarily hand out eviction notices like the new manager did yesterday. This has been a difficult year so far: for the country, the world and personally. But at least I felt safe for the first time in many years - until I found out that we were getting a new manager.

And even then, I hoped management would be reasonable enough not to shock people into constant worry about what bizarre thing they will do next. The people who live here know they were blessed to have had such a special manager, and she chose such exceptional renters that I've often been amazed by the people compared to the mean renters I had encountered before. Except for the respite with our special former manager here, its been hard to live in peace and do the writing and art I've been trying to do all my life.
