Influence: Quentin Tarantino, Chuck Berry, Rachel Carson

Pulp Fiction:"You Never Can Tell"

When Quentin Tarantino filmed the famous dance scene of his acclaimed Pulp Fiction, he chose a song by Chuck Berry, who already had a profound influence on music. Neither man was afraid to 'step outside the box' and be who he was, following his gift, no matter how strange it may have seemed to those expecting the norm. It takes courage to step beyond restrictions, beyond what people will think, and beyond those who tell you you can't. As a result, both men have had a monumental effect on subsequent musicians and filmmakers.
It's the same with art, writing, medicine.
Manet's flattened perspective was a catalyst for other artists to depart from traditional painting. David Foster Wallace not only departed from the status-quo, but overtly encouraged authenticity (not mimicry) in subsequent writers. Rachel Carson began a revolution against pesticides while being threatened and condemned for writing Silent Spring.
A woman ahead of her time, Dr.Marian Diamond had the courage to follow her interest in the brain, discovering the miracle of brain plasticity, and myriad other gems like associative memory making longhand writing better for learning than a keyboard.
Her discoveries have paved the way for others. We now know that we can relieve physical pain with regular writing about our frustrations and that by reducing stress we can lengthen telomeres that, as they shorten, age us no matter how young we may be. And we now know the immense influence of environment on our well-being.
Think of it: What you do today, the environment you create for yourself and others, and your courage to "step out there" can have a profound influence far beyond what you may ever realize.
