As I've been saying, I 'heard' the insistent silent call for impeachment almost two years before discussion of it flared. And although older, wiser Nancy Pelosi forestalled the demands of her younger Congress long enough to try to choose a Constitutional infraction serious enough for something as monumental as impeachment, most of us knew it would implode. Senators up for re-election (like Susan Collins, who had outraged her Democratic and Independent constituents when she voted for Kavanaugh, doesn't want to antagonize her Maine Republicans; and other Senators seem to feel similarly cautious, even ranking elder Democrat Diane Feinstein.) It is unlikely that witnesses will be called, and ultimately, that even "censure" will be chosen. Meanwhile, the president gets to do what he chooses, whether it be to ask a foreign country to ruin his political rival, or implore the Russians to find anything that might incriminate his opponent.
Alan Dershowitz is saying exactly the opposite of what he preached 20 years ago, Ken Starr is taking a different stance as well, and the House Managers are just obfuscating any clear arguments that may have been there. Minds are hardened. Opinion reigns over fact.
So this circus has left us more divided, more fractured, and increasingly with autocratic principles, which will travel through following administrations, Democratic, Republican, Libertarian, Green, etc. The founding fathers would NOT be "turning over in their graves": They knew our human frailties, which is why they tried to include checks and balances.
