I first heard "Hello in There" in the apartment of a PhD
student I'd just met in the Art Building. The lyrics, written by a young
John Prine, were those of an empath way beyond his years. He wrote as if he knew the feelings of all people. His songs never
left me. "Angel from Montgomery" an actor taught me on the train to
California. I sing it to this day. But my favorite, "Lake Marie," haunts
me most. His songs reached the soul. His colloquial lyrics and
river-like music said it like no other of the 20th century. Lake Marie
