The Middle East's Treacherous Plight

When Golda Meir met a young Senator Biden, she told him they (Israelis) were alone in the middle east. The great Golda Meir was one of the founders of the State of Israel and its fourth Prime Minister. The United States has had great sympathy for Israel which was founded after the holocaust. President Obama believed there could be a two-State solution if Israel stopped building on Palestinian territory. But when Vice-President Biden met with Prime Minister Netanyahu, he was confounded by Netanyahu’s insistence on continuing settlement expansion. The present great loss of lives is tragic. And Biden is in an inexplicably difficult position. The continuing problem between Israel and Palestine is fed by Iran and Russia. The U.S. turning on Israel would be akin to giving these countries power over the Israel the U.S. promised to protect. As Obama tells us: This is a dangerous time with two major conflicts in the world. Netanyahu is being pushed by hard-liners who kept him in power. In my opinion, the only solution seems to be a three-State, which doesn’t seem probable at this time.
