Mavis Staples, on Colbert last night, sang this song written for her. Such a spirit, the first to sing "I'll Take You There." This song was written for her. Still feisty, still believing.
Among the many unforgettable things she has said was this: "Well Lord, I'm still on the case. I'm still doing what Dr. King and Pops want me to do. I'm still on that freedom highway, and I'm going to walk on it until Dr. King's dream is realized." More than once, she refused Bob Dylan's marriage proposal. She had a bad young marriage which cured her (I know how that is). Unforgettable spirit.
