Emotional appeal: This is the argumentative technique Kavanaugh used: weeping, describing his daughter "praying for Dr. Ford," emphasizing his good deeds, then raging, shouting, grimacing. All of this is textbook persuasion. He had few to persuade, really: minds were made up. And, as older Senator Leahy sadly lamented as he left the hearing: "It's Clarence Thomas all over again."
So what was the point? Where is the Justice? Why is it admirable for a man to become this "belligerent" (behavior which proves he could be like this when drunk, as many have described)?
And what about Jeff Flake and his crucial crossroads judicial vote tomorrow? He's not going to run again. But he's everywhere, always giving his opinion when a new issue pops up. He's got to be in the spotlight, clearly navigating his next political move: no surprises there.
This vote leaves Dr. Ford (with credentials more impressive than Kavanaugh's and a story horrifying to most women) on the tracks of "that train" that was inevitably never going to alter its course, no matter the cost to her and - ultimately - the Country.
Stunned with this realization, all that came to me was a tune. Then I realized with a shudder, it was the song "God Bless America."
