Urgent intel was disregarded in the months before 911. Now 22 years later, this attack that irrevocably altered the United States has received only passing mention. Few born at that time could comprehend how it felt to go into buildings without metal detectors, get on planes and trains without scrutiny and increased ethnic and religious profiling, or live without pervasive rules. Two wars were launched, destroying lives, and the US became known as a country that condoned torture. 911 was called a day “we would never forget.” But as memories fade, altered lives do not.
