Dr King's Goals to End Poverty and Injustice

Dr Martin Luther King's last mission was to end poverty. He said I may not get there with you, but I have seen the promised land. I was living in Atlanta when he died. Things had begun to improve. In spite of backlash, there was freedom in the air, self-expression in the streets. And Dr King's campaigns brought hope. Yet that day, all the building windows were boarded anticipating riots. The reaction there, though, was subdued: stunned grief - although not in the rest of the country. And while some of his dreams have been realized, most of them have not. This country continues to form factions based on differences. And poverty is far greater than it was. Please see the article "Remembering Martin Luther King, Jr's Solution to Poverty" that anyone can access at theatlantic.com. And Cornell West often reminds us that Dr King was a radical, albeit a peaceful one: yet the celebration of Dr King's birthday presents an abbreviated, sanitized version of the man and his ideas. (I've written several posts: type Dr King in this site's search box.)
