Earth Week: Wangari Maathai
For years beginning in the 1970s, Wangari Maathai planted trees
to help rural woman, their families and environment thrive. Called the Green Belt Movement, her work resulted in 30
million trees by the time she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004.
She was a vibrant, beautiful person who would dig in the earth
with her hands as she planted each tree. Dedicated to the connection
between ourselves, communities and the environment, she was called The
Woman of Trees.
