Israeli PM Netanyahu wants to remain in power. So he rejected Hamas' recent agreement to end the war and return hostages. Netanyahu knows that Israel's ultra-nationalists will accept nothing less than total occupation of Rafah and will "topple" Netanyahu's coalition government if there is no Rafah ground war. Meanwhile, families of the hostages are demonstrating and blocking roads, demanding that Netanyahu accept the ceasefire. And President Biden, who has risked his presidency for supporting Netanyahu, has begun to withhold his support. Yet Netanyahu, who doesn't want to lose power, has started shelling Rafah where yesterday people were giving peace signs because of Hamas accepting the deal and simultaneously leaving Rafah with nowhere to go, taking few and some, even no, personal belongings.
