There was another female professor I sometimes ran into in coffee shops (my favorite places to write and think). She is the only person I personally know who has long believed that writing by hand strengthens the brain's capacity for deep creative thought. Now, recently, I have come across more research on the importance of writing by hand instead of the computer. Writing by hand engages coordination between the brain's motor and visual systems, which is far more complex than typing. Writing by hand helps us better grasp concepts and ideas. Many writers believe writing is thinking: a way to discover what we really think about an event or idea. It's also a way to process trauma. Now according to this recent research on the complexity of writing by hand, writing really is thinking.
