One of my extraordinary friends volunteered in Haiti. Before she left,
she learned Haitian Creole from cards with Haitian words taped to her
walls and cabinets. She had studied in the islands as a shy teenager and
felt most comfortable with diverse populations. But the extent of
Haiti's poor and the corruption of its government troubled her so much
that it was difficult for her to speak of it when she returned. But she
did express the beauty of the mountains. She didn't live long after she
returned. Around that time, she painted this picture from a dream. It's
like a vision. She was a gifted artist and deeply spiritual. (Edie DeBrue 2010)
