Hotel Rwanda recently reaired, showing how media misinformation can contribute to misunderstandings, mistrust, and ultimately violence. When I taught Communication and Journalism, students didn't always realize that traditional media (newspapers, television) try to be as objective and unbiased as possible. Without an objective free press, it's difficult to keep a country free. As I've written before, the media, or 4th Estate, is essential to democracy. When the press is influenced or monitored, it becomes a function of an individual or government's power and no longer an objective source of information.
There are only a few remaining sources that attempt to be independently objective. But now, even they are being compromised. The recent decision of billionaires to prevent Washington Post and L.A. Times Presidential endorsements sparks a dire warning. In fact, both of these newspapers have been respected for their objectivity and were poised to endorse Harris. In fact, employees of both newspapers are objecting and quitting. Ironically, the Washington Post has published an objection on X: our "global town hall" now owned by the most powerful of men who is determined to elect a President bent on destroying what has tried to be a Republic.
Ironically, Hotel Rwanda just aired, illustrating the destruction of misinformation and corrupt media.
